The Greyhound Sanctuary
The Greyhound Sanctuary‘s main aim is to rescue and rehome abandoned, abused or unwanted greyhounds. Providing kennels or foster homes until the dogs find their forever home. they do this as tens of thousands of dogs are disposed of every year by the British greyhound racing industry – because they fail to make the grade as racers or when their racing days are over.
We've Donated £6000!
The Greyhound Sanctuary is a small, independent charity based in Devon. Established in 2007, our main aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned, abused and unwanted greyhounds and lurchers. There is a huge problem with the overbreeding of greyhounds and lurchers for racing and hunting purposes in Ireland and the UK. Many greyhounds will never even race and many thousands are retired each year aged only 2-3 years old. There are simply not enough homes for all of these dogs and many end up being euthanised or abandoned.
Greyhounds and lurchers make wonderful pets, they are gentle, sweet natured, funny, affectionate and usually very lazy! Despite what people may think greyhounds do not need a huge amount of exercise, after a walk they will happily spend the rest of the day snoozing on their bed or a comfy sofa! They are very loyal and loving despite often having had a hard start to life.
Due to these types of dogs being perceived by many people in Ireland as working dogs they are particularly hard to rehome there, so we help (as much as our resources allow) by working with an Irish charity that sends dogs over to be rehomed in the UK. We rent kennel space at Kinnings Farm Boarding and Rescue Kennels and are sometimes able to have some dogs in foster homes too. We look after the dogs for as long as it takes to find them a suitable loving home.
The Greyhound Sanctuary is run by a small group of trustees and volunteers and relies entirely on donations. We do what we can to try and raise awareness of the issues these dogs face and promote them as wonderful pets.
Pictured above is Freddie who is waiting for his forever home. Freddie is a young, medium sized lurcher; only about 9 months old. He was found as a stray in Ireland and was in poor condition, very underweight and frightened. You would never know he had such a bad start to life as a few months on he has gained some weight and is loving life! Freddie is a really fun dog to be around and very loving, he likes to lean on you for a good cuddle! Freddie loves people and is good with other dogs so he will make a fantastic pet. For more information about Freddie and the other greyhounds and lurchers we have for rehoming please take a look at our website www.thegreyhoundsanctuary.org
