Earlier this year SPANA received a £5000 donation from Animal Friends for winning first place in the March ‘Charity of the Month’ competition. The funds have continued to support SPANA’s work to improve the lives of working animals across the world.
One donkey who has benefited from the donation is Mahdouda.
Mahdouda (meaning ‘lucky’) was found by vets at SPANA’s Chemaia centre, she was injured and suffering from a large abscess after being abandoned by her owners. The vets took her in for treatment and after a few months of rest and recuperation, Mahdouda was ready to be re-homed.
SPANA’s Morocco team wanted to make sure she went to a loving new home and thought Kacimi Mberek, a 90-year-old man who had recently lost his donkey to a lung condition, would be the perfect match for Mahdouda.
Kacimi is blind and relies on having a donkey to transport him around to collect water from the well and to the local souk, with the help of his family members to guide the donkey.
After collecting Mahdouda in July, the SPANA team have kept in regular contact with Kacimi and Mahdouda is settling in very well at her new home.
