Animal Friends Blog
Shropshire Cat Rescue was established in 1998 by a small group of cat lovers in the Shrewsbury area. Since then it has grown into a broader foster care network for stray, unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens throughout Shropshire. Our main shelter is located at Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury plus we have foster homes in the Oswestry and Welshpool areas.
Shropshire Cat Rescue has a no-kill policy and will never allow a healthy animal to be put to sleep. We provide permanent shelter to 36 ‘special needs’ cats including 23 elderly cats who will live out the rest of their lives in our Moggies Retirement Village. Last year we successfully rehomed over 400 cats and kittens.
Entirely volunteer led and receiving no major funding, we rely on donations from the public whether that takes the form of monetary donations, or food donated via supermarket collection points, or unwanted items donated for resale in our two charity shops. As we have no paid staff, all of the money raised goes to directly help the cats and kittens in our care.
Although our main concern is the welfare of the cats needing our care, it doesn’t stop there. We also promote responsible pet ownership through education and encouraging owners to have their pets neutered by offering discounted neutering vouchers to those on low incomes. We are working closely with Housing Associations to encourage them to implement pet policies within their tenancy agreements to ensure that issues of pet nuisance or cruelty and neglect can be reduced.
As well as this we offer comprehensive work experience placements for young people and for those wishing to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh award. We also offer volunteer opportunities to disadvantaged groups to help them develop their skills in the community. We encourage visits to the shelter from people who may have been forced to give up their cats due to housing difficulties.
Thanks to our dedicated volunteer team and the generosity of our supporters we believe that Shropshire Cat Rescue has a great future ahead and will be here for many years to come.
