WDC carry out their monumental task through a variety of methods. Their conservation and research projects are implemented globally with the aim of improving conservation policies. Examples of such projects undertaken and facilitated by WDC are studying the effects that climate change and various types of pollution have on whales, dolphins and porpoises. They also assist in maintaining extremely important marine habitats throughout the world that help to protect whale, dolphin and porpoise species facing extinction as a result of human activity. Work is carried out by WDC to reduce collisions between animals and ships, and rescue efforts are undertaken and supported to save stranded animals on coastlines around the world.
Additionally, WDC campaigns against many issues that affect whales, dolphins and porpoises including climate change, whaling, animals in captivity and the promotion of such centres by holiday companies. The charity also campaigns for the international recognition of the rights of whales, dolphins and porpoises, and take action to reduce threats posed to them by humans.
Educational packs and activity booklets have been created by WDC and are provided free to schools to promote a deeper understanding of whales, dolphins and porpoises, and the importance of conservation. Reports, books and other publications are produced, as well as posters, presentations and talks that detail the charity’s conservation work. WDC also encourage safe and responsible whale and dolphin watching, where animals can be viewed in their natural habitat. This is not only an educational experience for the viewer, but it can also discourage whaling since it is an alternative method for communities to make money. WDC trains whale watch operators and guides so that the activity may be engaged in responsibly, whilst working to develop and improve regulations.
In 2014 Animal Friends donated £20,000 to WDC to assist them in continuing their fantastic work in conserving whales, dolphins and porpoises.
