These little bite-sized Christmas biscuits are a lovely little savoury snack for either your dog or cat, and they are super-speedy to knock together. Even a complete kitchen novice can manage them.
1 small packet of bacon lardons
A handful of oats
3 tablespoons of rice flour
1. Cook the bacon lardons in a frying pan at a medium heat. You will not need any oil at all as they are quite fatty, which will help stop them from sticking. When they are completely cooked, carefully discard half of the melted fat and leave everything in the pan to go cold and solidify.
2. Meanwhile peel and mash the banana, either by hand or in a blender. The banana acts as a binder and will help keep all the ingredients together. Once the banana is smooth, add the oats and rice flour and mix until they form a dry, thick dough. If it is too sticky, add a little more flour and oats until it reaches a better consistency.
3. Once the bacon fat has gone white and solid, mix it into the dough along with the bacon pieces. When it’s all combined drop small balls of the mix onto a greased baking sheet. These treats should be quite small as they will be fairly fatty. If you’d like them to be a specific shape then you can always flatten out the dough (it may be too dry to roll it) and cut out festive shapes like stars, Christmas trees or bells.
4. Once you have your shapes pop them in the oven for around 20 minutes at 180 degrees fan. If you want very crisp treats you can flip them over about halfway through.
5. Once cooled leave them in a warm, dry place. This will make sure they keep for longer… not that your pet will let them hang around uneaten for long! You can substitute the bacon for any finely-cut cooked meat, so if your pet is overweight you can use a lean meat such as turkey or chicken.
