Pet travel following a no-deal Brexit

Brexit, while it seems to have been going on forever and is constantly dominating the headlines, there are still some unanswered questions especially if it’s a no-deal scenario. Currently, pet dogs and cats can enjoy free movement between EU countries, something that will change if we’re unable to strike a deal with the EU.

What do pets need to travel now?

When travelling within the EU there are a few rules to meet under the scheme before you can set off. For the time being these are:

  • A valid EU pet passport.
  • Your dog or cat needs to be microchipped.
  • Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies.
  • Dogs must be treated against tapeworm before their return to the UK.

Pet travel if there’s a no-deal Brexit

In the event of a no-deal Brexit, the UK is likely to be an unlisted country under the EU Pet Travel Scheme, causing some difficulties for those preparing for travel with their pet. You must prepare for this possible outcome if you’re thinking of travelling with your pet following the deadline of 31st October 2019.

Here’s what you would need to do 4 months in advance of your travel:

  • A valid EU pet passport.
  • Your pet needs to be microchipped
  • Get a rabies vaccination and then a blood test 30 days later.
  • Wait 3 months before travelling following a successful blood test.
  • Book an appointment with your vet to get an animal health certificate no more than 10 days before travel.

If you are travelling to the EU with your cat or dog after the Brexit deadline, you should discuss your travel requirements with your vet as soon as possible. There are plenty of articles and blogs on the effects of a no-deal Brexit and it can be quite confusing at times, so for the most up-to-date information please visit the DEFRA website.
