Cat insurance FAQs
Depending on the policy you chose cat insurance helps you to cover the cost of veterinary treatment if your cat gets injured or falls ill. It can also have additional benefits such as cover for if your cat dies or is put to sleep (if you paid for them) or if they injure someone or damage their property.
It is important to choose a cat insurance policy that best suits your needs now and in the future. We have policies that can provide cover for accidents and illnesses. If you would like to cover your cat for long-term conditions which will need treatment year after year, such as diabetes, then you may prefer a Lifetime policy. If you have a smaller budget then you may choose to have cover for accidents only or for an illness that will not last more than 12 months.
Find out which policy meets your needs by completing an online quote.
The cost of cat insurance can vary widely depending on several factors, including your cat’s breed, age, location, any claims history and the level of cover you choose. The price of cat insurance is influenced by the following factors:
- Breed: Some cat breeds are prone to certain conditions, and may have higher premiums due to the potential for more frequent or costly vet visits.
- Age: Older cats often have higher premiums because they are more likely to develop health conditions in later life. This means that your policy price is likely to increase at renewal even if you haven’t made a claim. You may also have to pay a co-payment of 20% of any vet fee claim, in addition to your excess, if your cat reaches the age of 10 years or over
- Location: Where you live can also impact the cost of cat insurance. Areas with higher veterinary fees (such as London) may lead to higher premiums.
- Claims history: If you’ve made claims for your cat in the past, we may charge a higher renewal premium to account for the increased risk.
- Level of cover: The cost of vet fees, the excess and any co-payment costs will also influence the price of your policy.
To get the most accurate cat insurance price, it’s important to get a personalised quote based on your cat's specific details. There is no limit to how much your premium may increase each year, and the increase could be significant.

If your cat is lost or stolen we will pay a percentage of the amount you paid or donated for them, depending on their age, up to the cover limit amount and the policy you choose.
This benefit is not available on our Accident Only policies.
Pre-existing conditions aren't covered by our cat insurance policies. We consider a condition to be pre-existing if it was first noticed before your policy start date or within the waiting period, whether your cat needed treatment previously or not.
How we consider a condition to be pre-existing
If you noticed something was wrong with your pet before you took out the policy, it could be a sign of a pre-existing condition. This is true even if you decided not to take them to the vet. For example, if your cat was limping before the policy started, and your vet later confirmed this was due to Arthritis, we’d consider this a pre-existing condition.
Making a claim with Animal Friends is straightforward and can be done in just a few simple steps:

Have your vet submit the claim for your cat online via Pawtal, or download a paper claim form from your account if your vet doesn’t use the online system. -

We offer cover for cats of all ages from 4 weeks old. However, for cats aged 10 years and over, a co-payment applies, meaning you’ll pay 20% of each vet fee claim in addition to your policy excess. This is due to the increased likelihood of health issues or injuries in older cats.
While insurance for older cats may be more expensive, it ensures your cat continues to receive the care they need as they age. For more details on our coverage for senior cats, visit our Older Cats Insurance page.
Animal Friends doesn’t offer multi-pet discounts, but we provide affordable coverage for multiple pets. Each of your pets will have its own policy, and you can choose different cover levels for each, based on their individual needs.
We keep prices as low as possible, so you get the best value cat insurance without the need for discounts. For more details, visit our multi-pet insurance page.
