Animal Friends Lends Charity Support to Born Free
As part of their one million pound charity challenge Animal Friends Insurance is proud to support a Born Free project based in Ethiopia, which assists wild animals including large cats and the Ethiopian Wolf.
Ethiopia is home to a stunning array of wild animals, from lions to cheetah, wild dogs to the beautiful Ethiopian wolf, an endangered canid found nowhere else in the world. Born Free Foundation has supported conservation initiatives in Ethiopia for over 15 years, and now, working with the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), is developing the country’s first and only Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Education Centre. Situated on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, on land secured for the project by His Excellency, President Girma Wolde-Giorgis, the Centre, known as Ensessakotteh, will provide a home for wild animals rescued from illegal trade and poor captive conditions. Supported by an Education programme, the rescued wild animals, who will be cared for in large naturalistic enclosures, will help tell the story of Ethiopia’s wildlife and the challenges it faces.
The African lion is the national symbol of Ethiopia, and recently Conservation Action Plans for lions and other carnivore species were publically launched at the Centre, while in the backdrop, the rescued lions and cheetah helped reinforce the importance of conservation initiatives aimed at protecting these animals in their natural environment.
Just a few weeks following the launch of the plans, Ensessakotteh took in four young cheetah cubs confiscated from illegal trade and a young lion whose mother had been poisoned for killing a camel. The work of Enssesakotteh reflects the aims of Born Free Foundation, which works tirelessly to prevent individual animal suffering, protect threatened species and keep wildlife in the wild. Founded by Virginia McKenna OBE and Bill Travers following their starring roles in the classic film Born Free, the charity is supported by celebrities including Joanna Lumley, Graham Norton, Amanda Holden, Martin Clunes, Helen Worth, and Jenny Seagrove.
Animal Friends is proud to be a long term supporter of Born Free. Recently Elaine Fairfax (Managing Director and founder of Animal Friends) was contacted about Born Free’s fantastic new project and met with Anne Tudor (Marketing Director for Born Free) to discuss the project further and how Animal Friends could support such a ground breaking project.
“I’m absolutely delighted that we are able to give such significant support to this vital project. It is a true centre of wildlife conservation and education in Ethiopia. Supported by the President himself we know it has a fantastic future which Animal Friends and its proud policyholders can all share in” says Elaine Fairfax, Founder and MD of Animal Friends said.
This donation will provide vital support for Ensessakotteh, Animal Friends’ help will also support the centre’s important education work, and the rescue, rehabilitation and where feasible, release, of wild animals back to their natural environment.
Anne Tudor, Marketing Director, The Born Free Foundation commented “Through the generosity of Animal Friends we are able to develop our centre, providing new homes and care to animals who are in desperate need. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the staff and customers….. true friends to the animals!”
