Suzy Lamplugh Trust dog theft campaign

Here at Animal Friends, we care deeply about animals and as pet owners ourselves, we understand how important they are and how devastating it can be to even think about having our beloved pet stolen.

DogLost has reported a 170% increase in incidents of dog theft in 2020 and we want to help raise awareness of the preventative steps pet owners can take to keep themselves and their cats or dogs safe – at home and when venturing out.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Suzy Lamplugh Trust to help create and sponsor their Dog Theft campaign.

Saskia Garner, Interim Senior Policy and Campaigns Manager, at The Suzy Lamplugh Trust said: “For 35 years the Suzy Lamplugh Trust has worked to make personal safety a life skill and a public policy priority, demanding and driving systematic change where needed to promote a society in which people are safer and feel safer. The mental and physical trauma experienced by dog owners who have had their beloved animals snatched, causes much alarm and distress, and we hope this campaign empowers people to take simple steps to avoid, mitigate or manage risks associated with this opportunistic and heinous crime”.

What is the Suzy Lamplugh Trust?

Suzy Lamplugh Trust was founded in 1986 by Diana and Paul Lamplugh following the disappearance and of their daughter Suzy. The Trust is regarded as the UK’s founding personal safety charity and leading stalking authority, with a long history of working within the stalking and harassment sector, managing the National Stalking Helpline.

Why we’ve chosen to work with them

Suzy Lamplugh Trust’s mission is to reduce the risk of violence and aggression for everyone and help people to live life to the full through campaigning, education and support. Our joint Dog Theft Campaign will provide clear advice for pet owners through educational videos and detailed advice sheets.

Why we are sponsoring their campaign

There is a rising concern in the public domain around the rise in pet theft reports, and we wanted to help keep our customers and their pets safe. It’s believed this is due to the demand for a pet during lockdown far outweighing the supply and with families willing to pay good money to add to their family, dogs are now a valuable asset to criminals everywhere.

We felt it was incredibly important to equip people with the knowledge and skill to know how to act in the event that the worst should happen.
