Best children’s books with cats

Whether you’re a cat person or not you’ve probably read a children’s book with a cat leading the way through the pages, providing an exciting bedtime story. If your kid’s cat-crazy then you might be running out of books to read, but don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

Scarface Claw and Slinky Malinki

Scarface Claw and Slinky Malinki are part of the Hairy Maclary series, imagined, created and illustrated by Dame Lynley Dodd. These books are fun for everyone, from the youngest in the family up to the eldest in the house.

Tabby McTat

You might have heard about Tabby McTat, the busker’s cat? Written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. A beautiful story for all ages with charming pictures, a guaranteed bedtime favourite.

This book has been so successful that there is a theatre show of Tabby McTat, playing at different locations through 2019!

Mog the Forgetful Cat

The story of Mog is a famous one involving the Thomas family, their cat, a burglar and a medal. A must-read for families with young children, one that makes us realise that despite our pet’s flaws, they often save the day without realising it.

Gobbolino the Witch’s Cat

This classic tale has been well loved by generations of children since it was published in 1942. Gobbolino, with his sparkling blue eyes and single white paw, doesn’t want to be a witch’s cat and longs to be a humble kitchen cat. Do his dreams of being a farm’s kitchen cat come true?

Atticus Claw

Atticus Claw used to be a burglar, then he became a cat detective. Sorry, the world’s greatestcat detective. Imagined by Jennifer Gray, there are plenty of books for children to get lost in. Their silent reading concentration will be interrupted by laughs and giggles.

The Cat in the Hat

A famous story about the cat in the hat who steps onto the mat and brings madness and mayhem into the lives of Sally and her brother on a day that would have been otherwise dull. Written by Dr Seuss, his stories have helped generations of youngsters learn to read while enjoying books full of bold illustrations.

Cats like these that we come across in the pages of books are being celebrated in the free “Cats on the Page” exhibition at the British Library, something Animal Friends are proud to be sponsoring.
