She is a rescue dog and was very nervous when we took her on at just under a year old – had never been away from her mother or brother, nor worn a collar or lead. My husband went to assess her as a potential police dog (not knowing at the time she was a white GSD) and he phoned me up to say he was actually bringing her home as she had been booked in the vets to be put to sleep that day. She was skin and bone and filthy dirty. As I had always wanted a white long haired GSD it was meant to be. Ever since then she has been my constant companion when I’m at home, and will follow me from room to room, but is quite happy to sleep when I’m not there, and happy to go for a walk with other family members and our other dogs. She’s turned from a timid little thing into a confident beautiful dog.
Sadly she has been diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy. She started to drag her back feet in approximately June 2015 and has deteriorated quickly. She now struggles to walk around the house, frequently leaning on the walls and furniture or she will fall over. I was always against dogs having wheels but my husband persuaded me to try her with them, and as far as she’s concerned it’s the best thing ever! She can now run around with the other dogs (although she has been known to run over one of them!) and chase her Kong toy again. There is no cure for DM regrettably and the life expectancy after first showing symptoms is approximately 1 year – although the disease itself does not kill, the dog becomes completely unable to walk and will become doubly incontinent. We will keep Daisy going as long as she is comfortable.
