Animal Friends Blog
Here at Animal Friends 9/10 of us own a pet, but we are all animal lovers. We’ve been raised beside dogs, adopted cats, ridden horses and even rescued budgies. So, when a member of staff loses a pet dear to them there are plenty of shoulders available, we are all listening ears because we’ve all been there at some point in our lives. It’s hard for anyone but pet insurance makes it a little easier. It’s one less worry when the worst happens.
Beth recently lost her young cat, Max. He was coming up to a year old but had to be put to sleep after developing feline infectious peritonitis. Max had become a little lethargic and started to sleep more during the day, but the weather had been rubbish, and cats do reflect the weather.
Beth knew something wasn’t right when he was hot to touch and took him to the vets. From there, they referred Max to a specialist after two courses of antibiotics failed to clear his temperature.
They used our Pawtal system throughout the claim procedure, where the referral practice was able to get our pre-authorisation for the costs of the tests and we were able to pay them as soon as it was all approved. This way, policyholders like Beth don’t have to worry about finding the money to pay the claim at a time which is stressful enough without any added uncertainty.
“Having insurance allowed us to refer Max to a specialist veterinary practice so that we could get a diagnosis for his symptoms, which we weren’t able to get from our first opinion vets.”
Max had our Lifetime Superior Plus policy, which meant if it had been a different diagnosis it would have allowed them to keep claiming for any ongoing tests or medication. Unfortunately, Beth had to face one of the hardest decisions we have to make as pet owners and Max was put to sleep.
When you lose such a beloved pet, getting money back from your policy might be one of the last things on your mind, but most of our policies do offer a Death of Pet benefit. For Beth, this meant she received 100% of the amount she donated when she rescued Max. We know this will never bring him back but it does allow you to put the money aside in case you would look at getting another pet in the future. It could even go towards a memorial of some sort, so they’re always with you.
“We may adopt a new furry friend to join our family at some point but we are currently still recovering from the sadness of losing Max so young, as he had such a big impact on our lives during the short amount of time he lived with us’
Whether you have an indoor cat or one that explores the great outdoors, insurance is so important as you just don’t know what’s around the corner. It can truly allow you to take care of your pet while we take care of everything else.
