Valentine’s Dinner with Your Pet

Love is most definitely in the air. For those spending Valentine’s Day with human partners, chances are that present buying, card choosing and evening planning is already underway. Then, of course, some of us intend to use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to spoil our pets! If you really want to push the boat out and show your pet that you care, there are few things they’ll enjoy more than a lovingly-prepared meal. We’ve created one for dogs and one for cats, so that you can give them a Valentine’s dinner to remember.

Dog Dinner – Beef Stew

This delicious, meaty stew is easy to make and contains plenty of healthy veg to give your dog some extra vitamins. If your dog is overweight then discard the gravy to remove some of the fat content from the meal.

Ingredients

1 stewing steak
1 carrot, diced
A handful of green beans, chopped roughly
1 small sweet potato
About 50g of oat flour, or porridge oats

  1. Microwave the sweet potato for between 4 and 8 minutes depending on the power of your microwave. Be sure to pierce the skin first. Once it has softened a little, set it aside to cool.
  2. Slice the steak into small chunks, about the size of the top of your thumb.
  3. Use a non-stick pan or a very small amount of oil and fry off the steak for 10-15 minutes until it’s cooked right through. Then take the beef out of the pan and place to one side.
  4. Add the oat flour or oats to the fat left behind and keep on a low heat, stirring constantly. If you’ve used oat flour this will start to make a thick gravy. If you have used oats they will cook into a meaty porridge. Oats are great for your dog’s digestion.
  5. Add the meat back to the pan along with the vegetables (including the sweet potato which should be chopped into chunks) and a generous splash of boiling water, and leave to simmer for around 10 minutes before letting it cool.
  6. Once it’s room temperature it is ready to serve! Give your dog a portion similar to their usual portion size, as this recipe may yield a larger meal than is appropriate for smaller dogs. This stew can be kept in the fridge for up to five days.

Cat Supper – Mackerel Pâté

Your cat will love this fishy dish. The fact that it’s both healthy and easy to make are just a bonus!

Ingredients

Tin of mackerel in oil
1 tablespoon of rice, cooked
2 tablespoons of low-salt fish stock

  1. Put all of these ingredients in a food blender and pulse until smooth. If you don’t have a blender you could just as easily mash it up with a fork.
  2. Then it is ready to serve!

This could also be made with any tinned fish, or even cooked chicken.
