Meet the Abandoned Animals Association

Abandoned Animals Association

Abandoned Animals Association is a small charity based in Prestatyn, North Wales and was founded in 1986.

Following years of rescuing and re-homing abandoned dogs and cats while renting kennels at various establishments, our long term aim was finally realised in September 2010 when thanks to the generosity of our members and residents of the North Wales area, we opened our very own rescue centre.  To date we have re-homed 166 dogs and 185 cats, despite this we only have 16 dog kennels (which includes 2 isolation kennels) and 8 cat pens!

Our dogs are collected from the local pound where they are due to be euthanased if not claimed after 7 days.  Once in our care, we do our utmost to find new and caring homes for all our animals and those which we are unable to re-home become long-term residents and will always have a comfortable home with us.  We have a strict non-destruction policy; only animals with untreatable illnesses are humanely put to sleep.

Cats are usually brought in by members of the public who are concerned for their welfare, having found them wandering the streets or left in a box, or for some reason can no longer cope.

All our animals are checked by our vet, fully inoculated, wormed, de-flead, microchipped and neutered before going to their new forever homes. Our home vetting team checks each home before the animal goes; we also make follow up calls and offer support.  New owners are fully briefed on all aspects of their animal’s care and we recommend they take out insurance cover with Animal Friends Insurance.

Reggie’s story

One cold winter I arrived at the Abandoned Animals Association. I’m not sure what happened to me before then, but I do remember being very hungry and quite close to death. I was very, very thin and weak. For a while it was touch and go as to whether I would survive.

However, with lots of love, attention and food from all the staff at the rescue centre, I managed to pull through and it wasn’t long before I was playing on the field with my best friends Dylan, Sofi and Tizer.

Not long after this, I formed a very close bond with one of the volunteers Chris; he used to take me on lovely long walks to the beach or up the hill.  So I thought it would be lovely to be with Chris all the time, so a plan was hatched and guess what? It worked! I was lucky enough to be re-homed with Chris and his wife Carol. Since then I have enjoyed a happy and healthy life, with lots of yummy food, snacks and lots of exercise.  I know now that this is my forever home.

I love sitting on the settee watching the TV especially the sheep on the farming programmes…but when the sheep disappear off the screen, I can’t find them! I even look behind the TV, much to the amusement of my owners!

I would like to give a very large lick to everyone at Abandoned Animals Association for rescuing me and for the care I received when I was most in need!

Maizie and Bob’s story:

This cat and kitten could have come to a very nasty end early one morning when they were dumped at the entrance to the lane leading to the Abandoned Animals Association Rescue Centre and a delivery driver narrowly avoided running them down.

Thankfully, he brought them up the lane to us at the rescue centre.  Maize and Bob had been neglected and were covered in fleas so they were taken to see our vets straight away to be checked over. They are now safe and being cared for.

We have just 8 cat pens and currently have 24 cats and kittens in residence with a waiting list of no fewer than 62 more that we have been asked to take in!

Zac’s story:

One of our dogs Zac presents a special challenge to us; Zac is a handsome young Border Collie but he has behaviour problems – among them he chases shadows! This means that he needs one-to-one attention from an experienced handler.  Our behaviourist is working closely with him along with our experienced staff and I’m sure before long he will be ready to go to his forever home.
